IRVINE, Calif. ? California Baptist University remained unbeaten against NAIA schools after Jennifer Grutz and Collette Brown scored eight goals in an 11-5 win over Concordia.
Grutz and Brown each scored a game-high four goals for the Lancers (18-16). Grutz posted a steal while Brown had two and dished out an assist. Chelsea Gentry, Ashleigh Rood and Sarah Hunter all scored single goals as well.
Kylie Chevalier dished out a game-high five assists. Gentry had a game-high three steals and an assist while Rood had two steals. Hunter, Tiffany Strickland and Rylee Scheid all recorded a steal as well.
Camryn Rogers notched double-figure saves, pulling down 12.
CBU trailed 2-0 after the first quarter, but blanked the Eagles 3-0 in the second, on goals from Gentry, Brown and Hunter to take a 3-2 lead at intermission. The Lancers outscored Concordia 8-3 in the second half, scoring five goals in the third quarter and three in the fourth while holding the Eagles to just two goals in the third and one in the fourth.
The Lancers scored the first three goals of the second half and the first two came from Brown. The junior put CBU up 5-2 less than two minutes into the third quarter before Grutz gave the Lancers a 6-2 lead. The Eagles broke the Lancers' 6-0 run with 5:35 left in the third with a goal, but CBU answered right back with goals from Grutz and Rood to take an 8-3 lead.
Concordia made it 8-4 heading into the fourth and closed it to 8-5 with 5:07 left to play, but the Lancers scored the last three goals of the game. Brown netted her last goal with 2:43 left before Grutz scored the final two goals.
The Lancers were 2-for-5 on 6-on-5 attempts and held the Eagles to just 3-for-8. CBU was 11-of-36 from the field.
