THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Good shooters are often in times of slumps told to just keep shooting and eventually it will breakthrough. California Baptist University never quit shooting and the persistence paid off in a 14-12 overtime win over the NCAA's Division III No. 7-ranked Cal Lutheran.
Despite shooting just 25 percent (6-for-24) from the field and allowing 80 percent (8-for-10) from its opponent, CBU (4-2) survived an overtime thriller with CLU. The Lancers struggled to find the back of the net and went ice cold late in the first quarter, but still held on for their second straight overtime win of the year. Freshman Eric Carnohan and sophomore Norbert Karoly each scored in overtime with Carnohan's coming in the first period and Karoly's coming in the second.
CBU led 3-1 in the first three minutes of the contest, but were inept in sliding one past the Kingsmen's keeper Jordan Bouey who tallied 15 saves. The Lancers were held to just to just one goal for nearly a quarter while Cal Lutheran scored six goals in that span. After leading 3-1, CBU found themselves trailing 4-3 with 3:57 left in the first and were down 7-4 heading into the second quarter. The Lancers answered with 6:08 left in the second to make it 7-5, but the Kingsmen took an 8-5 lead 15 seconds later. Tommy Hunter brought CBU back within two at the half at 8-6.
Later in the third quarter, CBU tied the contest at 9-9 and 10-10 and took its first lead since the opening period when Carnohan scored his first goal of the game with 5:09 left to play. Jeff Woolstenhulme gave CBU a 12-10 lead with 2:18 play, but the Kingsmen scored two goals in the final two minutes to force overtime.
That's when Carnohan and Karoly came up with the game-winners.
Aaron Steiger finished with his fourth hat trick of the early season along with Chris Toy who also netted a trio of goals. Karoly and Hunter each scored a pair of goals while Woolstenhulme, Danny Tayenaka, Carnohan and Peter Hines all scored single goals. Austen Ramer finished with 10 saves and six.
The Lancers finished the day shooting 14-for-46 from the field. Both teams were 1-for-2 on 6-on-5's and CBU was 1-for-3 in penalty opportunities.
The Lancers will play Claremont Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow to close out the Cal Lu Fornia Tournament.
