PORTLAND, Ore. --- Stop if you've read this before. California Baptist University falls behind in the second half, gets a late goal to force overtime and then plays 20 extra minutes with no scoring.
If it sounds familiar, that's because it is.
For the third straight game, the Lancers didn't lose. But they didn't win either. Instead, they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw, this time playing the NAIA's No. 25-ranked Concordia (Ore.) even in their first game in two weeks.
The Lancers are now 0-0-3 on the season. The Cavaliers are now 1-1-1.
“We deserved to win today,” said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. “The guys played great, and I was pleased with the way played. We are continuing to take steps forward in our ability to dictate the game, and at some point we'll get the result we deserve.”
CBU outshot Concordia, 16-12, and nearly got the golden goal, but Josh Cormier's strike just 1:48 into the second overtime period banged off the post.
After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers broke through first. Facundo Dipascuale cleaned up a scramble in front of the box and tapped in the game's first goal in the 58th minute, sneaking it past Dan Kelly, who was making his first career start between the pipes.
“We had to chase the game for the third straight time, but again, the guys showed the character to come back from a deficit to draw even,” said Jorden.
It took the Lancers just 11 minutes to draw even.
In the 69th minute, Osvaldo Bastida fired a 15-yarder from the right side and just inside the far post for the equalizer. It was Bastida's first goal of the season.
Both Kelly and Concordia GK Claudio Lazar made five saves apiece.
