MCMINNVILLE, Ore. --- After a trio of ties to begin the season, California Baptist University finally got into the win column Monday with a 1-0 victory on Labor Day at NCAA Division III Linfield (Ore.).
The win moves the Lancers to 1-0-3 overall and keeps them undefeated to start the 2009 campaign, giving them their longest unbeaten streak to start a season since 2001 when they won their first six games before finishing an all-time best 12-4. During the streak, the Lancers have tied NCAA Division I UNLV and the NAIA's No. 25-ranked Concordia (Ore.) as well as NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino.
Linfield falls to 0-2-1.
“It wasn't the best performance, but the fact of the matter is we got the result,” said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. “Bottom line is this was a good trip. The guys came together, and hopefully we'll see the results of that play out as the season moves along.”
For the first time this season, the Lancers scored first. Gabriel Gonzalez, who led the team in scoring last year, tallied his first goal of the season in just the eighth minute when he headed home a corner kick from Willie Rupert. That was all the Lancers needed.
CBU controlled much of the play and out-shot the Wildcats, 20-9, including a 13-2 mark in the second half. Linfield keeper Jon Thompson collected eight saves to keep the Wildcats in the game.
Dan Kelly started between the pipes for the second straight game and posted the Lancers' first shutout of the season without needing to make a save.
