RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University put the finishing touches on a dominating weekend with a resounding 7-0 win over Menlo Saturday in the final game of the CBU Tournament.
The win moves the NAIA's No. 8-ranked Lancers to 5-0. With wins over No. 1 Lee (Tenn.) and No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), the Lancers are sure to move up in the next rating, which is released Tuesday afternoon.
Menlo drops to 0-2.
For the second straight day, the Lancers were efficient and overpowering on the offensive end. In two games, they out-scored their opponents by a combined 13-0. But as impressive as they have bee n on the offensive end, the Lancer defense has been equal to the task pitching 289 consecutive minutes of scoreless soccer the past four games.
It was the Lancers' third straight shutout.
Six different Lancers scored yesterday. Five different players scored today.
CBU out-shot the Oaks, 35-2, and scored on seven of its 13 shots on goal. Britney Quiroz scored twice, Giannina Loza converted a penalty kick, and the Lancers were also the benefactors of an own goal.
Fabiola Zanella da Silva got things started with a strike in the 19th minute. She received a ball from Kitra Walters in the box and easily tapped it past Menlo keeper Paige Cruz. Just 11 minutes later, Jenny Kute made a nice run from midfield and played give-and-go with Amanda Lammers. Kute ripped a ball from the left side into the far post netting to a 2-0 Lancer lead in the first half hour of play.
Lizzy Bendrick then scored for the second straight game off another give-and-go, this time from Eva Solis, who registered her team-best fifth assist. Less than two minutes after Bendrick's goal, Qurioz cleaned up a mess in front of the net in the 39th minute to give the Lancers a 4-0 lead that they carried into the locker room.
Quiroz then scored again after connecting with Bendrick in the 58th minute. In the 60th minute, Amanda Lammers touched a ball into the box, and an Oak defender couldn't control and promptly put into the net for an own goal.
In the 68th minute, Loza was taken down just inside the left side of the box. The lefty then stepped up and struck a low shot to Cruz's left on the ensuing penalty kick to complete the scoring.
