In the opening quarter of the Lancers game against the Roadrunners, CSUB scored first, but CBU matched it goal for goal, as the pair of teams finished the first period tied, 2-2. Less than one minute into the second quarter, the Roadrunners scored again, but once more the Lancers answered with a goal of their own, tying the contest, 3-3. Then, with less than one minute until half time, CBU took their first lead of the game, grabbing a 4-3 edge going into the break.
After several turnovers opened the third period, CSUB tied the game again, 4-4. Just 30 seconds later, however, CBU scored, and took a lead it would not relinquish. With four minutes left in the contest, the Lancers added to their lead, 6-4. The Roadrunners did not let up though, as they pulled back within one, 6-5, with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. Over the final two minutes of the contest, CBU tacked on two more scores to seal the upset.
"We really went out and executed," said head coach Jacob Medina. "The key to this game was that we controlled the tempo."
Jennifer Grutz and Chelsea Gentry each recorded a hat trick in the Lancers' win.
"It was our first win over a top-20 team in two years," said Medina. "I'm glad we were able to do it this early in the season."
In their first game of the day, the Lancers' quick-firing offense got going early this morning, as CBU netted four goals in the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead. The Lancers added one more score in an uneventful second quarter to take a 5-1 advantage into halftime.
Fresno Pacific scored first to open the second half, closing the gap to 5-2, but the Lancers quickly shut the door on any comeback attempt. CBU closed the game on a 6-0 run across the final two quarters to easily take the win.
Gentry tallied four scores in the contest, while Grutz added three goals.
The Lancers will be playing again on Saturday, day two of the Lancer Invite. CBU will face off against No. 13 Cal State Northridge at 10:30 a.m.
