RIVERSIDE, Calif.--- After a lackluster first half, No. 14 California Baptist University defeated in-town foe Riverside CC 18-10 at the Lancer Aquatic Center.
The win was number 20 on the season and the seventh in a row for the Lancers who are now 20-3.
The Tigers of RCC (13-6) appeared to be the hungrier team early on, but their effort wouldn't be enough as the Lancers put it on late.
The game began as it usually does for CBU, with Brent Troutman winning the opening sprint (his 23rd of the season). The Lancers then went on to open the game with three straight scores from three different players (Trevor Rowland, Alan Ogden and Aaron Steiger).
RCC, however, fought back with a 3-1 run to end the quarter.
The second was marred with penalties as both RCC and CBU traded off 6-on-5 opportunities. The Lancers, who have had struggled with man-up chances, scored on three of their first four.
“We've been working hard on our man-up offense and we're seeing it pay off,” said head coach Rick Rowland. “The guys are making better reads.”
Ogden helped keep the Tigers outside striking distance with two of his 7 goals in the quarter.
With an 8-5 halftime lead it seemed as if CBU had a case of the JC blues once again, but freshman Evan Vardayou showed determination with a hat trick in the third quarter to help light the Lancers' fire.
CBU then swam ahead 14-8 to end the third.
In the fourth the Lancers continued to play strong, sealing the win with 4 goals to the Tigers 2.
CBU's leading scorer, Steiger, was held to just 2 goals (avg 3.6 per game) as six Lancers scored including 3 from Toy.
Keeper, Austen Ramer, had a big day with 11 saves.
The men will now travel to the Concordia Tournament this weekend.
The Lancers will get another shot at Golden West after the Rustlers defeated CBU 12-9 at the Lancer Aquatic Center on Sept. 29.
“We're hoping for a little payback,” said Rowland.
The Lancers are just three wins shy of matching their 2009 season total, and can come within one after the weekend. The most wins CBU has ever recorded in one year is 29 (2008), and with 12 games left the Lancers have a shot at breaking that mark.
