FULLERTON, Calif. --- California Baptist University has done a little of everything this year, but it did something Wednesday it hasn't done all year.
It played to a tie.
The 10th-ranked Lancers scored early but gave up an equalizer just six minutes later and couldn't score again in settling for a 1-1 draw at Hope International. It is their first tie in 15 games this year.
The Lancers, who had won back-to-back games last week, move
to 10-4-1 overall, 4-3-1 (13 points) GSAC. The Royals, who are winless in seven
GSAC games, are now 5-6-3, 0-4-3 (3 points).
"Playing in difficult conditions on a poor surface was challenging," said CBU
Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Credit Hope in its preparation. We had a big win Saturday, but we need to be more consistent. We certainly had our chances, but we weren't as
sharp as we would have liked to have been for 90 minutes. It comes down to
execution and we weren't sharp in our finishing today."
Coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over No. 2 Azusa Pacific Saturday, the Lancers showed no signs of a let up scoring in the 23rd minute. Megan Merrett got to the end line on the right side and served a ball into the box. Kylee Nicassio did what she does best and rose above the defense and headed in her eighth goal of the year.
The lead was short-lived as in the 29th minute, the Royals tied it up. Kylie McCormick bent a corner kick that deflected off a Lancer defender and past keeper Nicoline Jorgensen to deadlock the game.
The Lancers out-shot the Royals, 10-5, the rest of the way and held a 12-7 advantage for the game but couldn't get the winner.
