RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Sloan McHann had four hits, and the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist University hit five more home runs in a pair of wins Saturday, keeping the Lancers undefeated.
The defending national champions defeated Holy Names, 9-1, with a McHann walk-off in the fifth in the opener and then came back with a 7-3 win over No. 20 Cal State San Marcos in the nightcap. Both Holy Names and Cal State San Marcos played in the national tournament last year.
The Lancers improve to 15-0 with the sweep, and with five more bombs today, CBU now has 36 in the first 15 games.
McHann homered in both games, once in her final at-bat against Holy Names and again in her first at-bat against Cal State San Marcos. Kendall Gorham provided the game-winning RBIs with a two-run shot, her ninth of the year, in the third against the Cougars. Nina Cabrales added a solo shot in the sixth.
Nicole Shoemaker hit a two-run shot in the third against Holy Names.
Melanie Ahumada (3-0) got the nod against the Hawks and scattered five hits and struck out three to pick up the win. Shoemaker, McHann and Sarah Hurlbut each had two hits.
The Lancers scored their first run in the first without the benefit of a hit. Ashley Boyd drew a leadoff walk and then stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch. Mara Rodriguez, who was celebrating her 19th birthday, gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the second.
After the Hawks got their lone run in the third when Gorham bobbled Alexis Moctezuma's single to center that plated Christine Gomez, Boyd led off the third with a double and scored on Shoemaker's second homer of the year. Hurlbut's RBI double gave the Lancers a 5-1 lead.
Gorham had a two-RBI single in the fourth before McHann ended the game with a shot to right.
Against Cal State San Marcos, McHann ripped a shot to the tennis courts beyond the right field fence to give the Lancers a quick 2-0 lead in the second. The Cougars, though, tied the game with a pair in the third off Emma Holden, who for the first time this year didn't strike out at least 10 batters.
Holden hit a batter and walked two others, including one with the bases loaded, to help the Cougars tie the game. The Lancers, though, answered right back on Gorham's two-run shot to deep left in the third, to make it 4-2. Shoemaker had an RBI double in the fourth, and Sarah Strong had an RBI single in the fifth before Cabrales got into the act with her bomb to give the Lancers a 7-2 advantage.
Cal State San Marcos got an unearned run in the seventh when Cabrales dropped a routine fly ball from Elizabeth Bush with the bases loaded. The Cougars got the tying run to the plate with one out, but Tory Ferreira, who relieved Holden in the fifth, induced a fielder's choice grounder for the second out, and then got Alyssa Dronenburg to ground out to second to end the game.
Holden (6-0) allowed just one hit in four innings, but she walked four and hit two. She struck out four. Ferreira worked the final three innings, giving up two hits, both in the seventh, and an unearned run to pick up her first save of the year.
McHann again had two hits. The Lancers had 10 hits in each game.
