RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Two very different teams showed up in the pool on Monday for California Baptist University, resulting in two very different outcomes.
The Lancers fell to Colorado State, 7-5, in the morning game, but came back to dominate their afternoon opponent, Marist, 12-8.
“It really was like we had two completely different teams out there today,” said Head Coach Jacob Medina. “That first game we were very sluggish and our shots were way off. The second game, though, was how we usually look.”
CBU had not competed in the pool since March 6 against Penn State Behrend and its rust showed against the Rams, only scoring five goals in the contest. Jennifer Grutz was the only player who seemed capable of finding any sort of rhythm for the Lancers, scoring all five of the team's goals. Kallie Berry had four goals for CSU while Ali Pavlik had two and Orsi Nadasdy had one.
The real hero for the Rams, however, was goalie Melissa Fisher, who stopped 13 shots including a late save in the fourth quarter to hold on to a two-goal lead.
The afternoon sun was much more kind to CBU after their disappointing loss to the Rams and the Lancers caught fire to defeat the Red Foxes 12-8.
Unlike the first game, CBU's scoring was much more distributed with six Lancers getting on the scoreboard. Grutz and Petra Kovacs each had three goals, Chelsea Gentry and Collette Brown had two a piece and Morgan Barrows and Christina Webb had one each.
CBU tried to bury the Red Foxes early by scoring nine goals in the first half on their way to a 9-4 lead. The Lancers only scored three more the rest of the way, but Marist did not have the firepower to climb back into the contest. The Red Foxes were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Angie Rampton, Samanthat Swartz and Agnes Konopka each had two goals for Marist and Kristen Barnett and Emily St. Omer Roy each had one.
“I liked the way the team looked in that second game,” said Medina. “They seemed to wake up and the shots were on target and finding the back of the net.”
With the split, the Lancers move to 13-9.
