RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The warm sun seemed to heat up more than just the seats in John C. Funk Stadium on Wednesday afternoon as California Baptist University's bats got hot defeating Hastings College 8-0 and 11-0 in two five-inning games.
A barrage of singles did the damage in the early game with the Lancers scoring all eight runs on nine singles and a double.
CBU jumped on the Broncos early by scoring four runs in the second inning. Briana Corral, Tina Galinato and Ashley Boyd all singled in runs. The Lancers also had three runs in the fourth the first coming on the lone extra-base hit of the game, a double by Boyd, which gave the Lancers a 6-0 lead.
Nicole Shoemaker had a sac fly and Kendall Gorham had RBI single following Boyd's double to complete the scoring.
Tory Ferreira was in the circle for the Lancers throwing four innings of shutout ball in which she struck out four and stranded five runners. Hastings advanced runners to third in both the first and fourth inning, but both times Ferreira got the hitters to ground out to end the threat. Melanie Ahumada came in for the final inning of work, striking out the last two batters to end the game.
To say the nightcap was a bit more power-packed is an understatement.
The Lancers had 11 runs on 13 hits and after hitting just one homer in the past five games, the Lancers, who two weeks ago were on pace to make a run at the NAIA single-season home run record, smacked four in game two to go along with four doubles.
Corral had a two-run homer in the first to kickoff the scoring; however, it wasn't until the fourth that the long-balls really started flying when CBU went back-to-back-to-back.
Caty Reeves started the fireworks with a two-out solo-shot and was followed immediately by Meagan Silva who hit a laser down the leftfield line and proceeded to fly around the base paths for an inside-the-park home run. Before the excitement in the stands had a chance to fade Sloan McHann blasted a shot over the center field wall to give the Lancers a 10-0 lead. Mara Rodriguez just missed making it four in a row when she doubled off the wall in right-center.
“The girls did a great job swinging the bats today,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “Coming back after getting our first loss yesterday and hitting like that against a national tournament team is a good sign.”
Gorham picked up the win in the circle for the Lancers striking out five in five strong innings.
The sweep brings CBU to 32-1 overall. Hastings is now 6-10.
