RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Petra Kovacs scored four goals to lead California Baptist University to a 16-9 win over NCAA Division I George Washington in the final game of the opening day of the Lancer Invitational Friday afternoon.
The win completed a perfect day for the Lancers, who also defeated Maryland, 13-7, earlier in the afternoon. Jennifer Grutz scored four goals against the Terps.
Kovacs scored the game's first goal and then broke a 1-1 tie with a goal with 4:52 left in the first. The Lancers never trailed again. After the Colonials scored on a penalty shot to make it 3-2, the Lancers erupted for five straight goals to put the game out of reach. They kept GWU scoreless in the second quarter and led 7-2 at halftime.
Kim Latschaw scored consecutive goals to give the Lancers their largest lead, 14-6, with 2:27 to play in the fourth.
Ten different Lancers scored. Latschaw and Chelsea Gentry each scored twice.
Camryn Rogers made nine saves in the first three quarters. Kristen Post came in and made five saves in the fourth quarter.
In the win against Maryland, the Lancers scored four of the first five goals and led 5-3 after the first quarter. Grutz broke a 1-1 tie with a 6-on-5 goal 2:17 into the game, and then 1:07 later Kovacs scored on another 6-on-5 to give the Lancers a 3-1 advantage.
Grutz scored the first goal of the second quarter before Maryland converted a penalty shot to get within 6-4. However, Collette Brown scored the first of three straight goals in a 2:44 span to open a 9-4 lead before the Lancers settled for a 9-5 advantage at the intermission.
CBU converted three 6-on-5 opportunities, all of them in the first quarter.
The Terps held the Lancers scoreless in the third quarter but could only score once. Brown scored two of the first three goals in the fourth to put the game away.
Rogers came up with 11 saves, including seven in the first half as the Lancers built up their advantage. Gentry and Brown each finished with three.
With the two wins the Lancers improve to 16-9. The Colonials fall to 5-8. Maryland is 9-10.
