RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- A 6-on-5 goal in the fourth quarter for Long Beach State was the difference in an extremely physical match as California Baptist University lost, 7-6, to the 49ers on the second day of the Lancer Invitational.
The two evenly matched teams were jockeying for position all afternoon in the pool, drawing 17 total ejections in the match.
“It was a hard fought match by both sides today,” said Head Coach Jacob Medina. “I would have liked a different result obviously, but overall I am happy with the way the team competed. That was probably our toughest and most physical opponent of the tournament, but the girls stood their ground out there.”
Long Beach State took a two goal lead into the half, but the Lancers came out firing in the third tying the game at 6-6 with just under a minute to go in the quarter. Jennifer Grutz got her second goal of the day to give the Lancers six.
An ejection called on Alyssa Birch with 7:12 to go in the fourth gave the 49ers a 6-on-5 opportunity and Melissa Matheson capitalized scoring to put Long Beach up for good, 7-6.
CBU had a final shot as the last seconds of the game ticked off the clock, but Collette Brown's attempt fell directly into the arms of 49er goalie Kristen Stragier.
The Lancers were only able to score on one of the eight 6-on-5 opportunities they had in the match while Long Beach State had five of its seven goals scored on 6-on-5 chances.
It was CBU's final match in the Lancer Invitational. The Lancers end up 2-1 on the Invite, 16-10 for the season.
