The Sun Devils jumped to an early 1-0 lead, just over a minute into the contest, but the Lancers quickly posted two scores of their own, taking a 2-1 edge. After knotting the score again, 2-2, halfway through the first quarter, ASU then pulled ahead by a goal with three and a half minutes in the first period. The Sun Devils' advantage was short-lived, however, as the two teams swapped another pair of goals, and closed out the first quarter even at 4-4.
ASU scored first in the second quarter as well, only to find the CBU tying things up again, just two minutes later. The Sun Devils tried to pull away late in the period, building an 8-5 lead, before the Lancers cut it back to two, 8-6, going into halftime.
The Lancers scored first in third, cutting the Sun Devil lead to one, 8-7. ASU, however, was able to maintain at least a one goal edge through the remainder of the quarter. Things remained close as the two teams entered the final period, and with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, CBU evened the score at 12-12. The Sun Devils put up two more scores over the final three minutes, to the Lancers' one, edging out a one-point victory over CBU.
The Lancers were led in the contest by Chelsea Gentry and Petra Kovacs who each posted four goals in the game.
CBU will play two more games in the Arizona State Invitational on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. The Lancers face off against Santa Clara at 1 p.m., and then against Hawaii at 4:30 p.m.
