RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Ashley Boyd had three home runs on the day as No. 1 California Baptist University swept Hope International University 7-0 and 10-2 on Saturday.
Boyd was 4-for-5 with five RBI on the day as she put on a show for a packed house there to support the Lancers in the annual StrikeOut Cancer game.
The game started with Clarice Angel, mother of Hope coach Ty Angel, being escorted to the mound by her granddaughter and Hope player Caitlin Angel to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Angel was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and currently undergoes chemotherapy since her cancer returned in July.
With both teams donning pink the spirit of the day was evident and for CBU it was a powerful day in more ways than one.
Boyd's first home run came in the sixth inning of the opener to cap the Lancers' 7-0 win. The game's scoring was also started by a homer as Briana Corral put the Lancers on top 1-0 in the second with a shot to right center. Nicole Shoemaker also had a triple in the fourth that drove in two runs.
Tory Ferreira got the win for CBU cruising to a two-hit complete-game shutout. Ferreira only had one walk to her five strikeouts coming very close to her second perfect game of the week. Kayla Uphold dumped a single into right field to break up the no-hitter bid in the fourth and Alexis Alonzo dropped a hit that fell just behind second base for the only other Royal hit.
Boyd wasted no time in the second game of the doubleheader, leading off with a deep home run to center field. She again came up in the second and hit a two-run shot for her fourth and fifth RBI of the day.
Shoemaker and Danae Leiser also hit home runs for the Lancers, giving the team a total of six on the day. CBU now has 75 home runs on the year.
The Lancers had eight of their 10 runs in the first two innings on their way to a 10-2 victory in five innings.
Melanie Ahumada uncharacteristically gave up two earned runs in the game doubling her total for the entire season. Ahumada gave up seven hits in her seven innings of work to earn her 13th victory of the year. She still leads the team with a 0.38 ERA.
The Royals threatened to extend the game in the top of the fifth inning when, after scoring a run on an Angel single, they had runners at the corners with no outs. Ahumada would buckle down, however, and strike out the next batter and induce a short pop fly and groundout to end the game.
CBU moves to 41-1 overall, 13-1 GSAC and HIU falls to 11-21, 0-14.
