Kovacs racked up four scores in the final quarter of a 9-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer, to bring her game tally to five. With the win, California Baptist is now 20-16 this season.
The Lancers tallied five goals to close the door on the Sagehens in the fourth period, due in part to the quartet of scores by Kovacs. Senior Jennifer Grutz also scored in the fourth-quarter barrage for the Lancers.
The game began much slower than it finished, however. To open play, the Sagehens scored first, and CBU managed only to knot the score at 1-1 by the end of the first quarter. Then in the second period, the Sagehens added two scores, to the Lancers' one, taking a 3-2 advantage over CBU into the break.
In the third quarter, each team scored once more, allowing Pomona-Pitzer to maintain its one-goal edge. The Lancers, however, got their offense firing on all cylinders in the final period to seal the win.
Kovacs led all scorers in the game with five goals, and senior Chelsea Gentry added a pair for the Lancers.
CBU will close out its 2010 season with the NAIA Spring Invitational. The tournament will take place Friday and Saturday in Fresno, Calif.
