DECATUR, Ala. --- On the scoreboard, California Baptist University's 7-0 victory over Midland Lutheran looked dominant.
On the field, it was a different story.
Six of the Lancers' seven runs were scored in the first inning off of Warrior starter Kelley Sladek, who did not make it out of the first, only recording one out in the game. CBU scored those six runs on just two hits, getting help from Sladek's five walks and one hit batter.
Once Sladek was pulled, Lyndsi Eckelberry came in and the game took on a whole new look. Eckelberry battled Lancer starter Melanie Ahumada the rest of the way only allowing one run on four hits and one walk through 5.2 innings pitched.
“We went cold after Sladek was pulled,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “I'm happy with a 7-0 win, but there are things we can improve on after today.”
The Lancers opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back walks drawn by Ashley Boyd and Briana Corral. After Sladek struck out Kendall Gorham for her only recorded out, she proceeded to walk Caty Reeves to load the bases. With the bases loaded Sladek would walk Nicole Shoemaker and hit Tina Galinato to give the Lancers two runs. Sarah Hurlbut then singled in one run and was quickly followed by Nina Cabrales, who doubled in two more. Eckelberry then came in the game and a sacrifice fly by Ashley Boyd scored one more before the Warriors got out of the inning.
The Lancers only managed one more run after that on a deep home run to left-center by Gorham in the sixth inning.
Ahumada had a solid outing in the circle throwing six innings of two-hit shutout ball. The only minor flaw was the five walks she gave up.
“Ahumada pitched a good game,” said Smith. “I would have liked to see less leadoff walks, but she didn't allow any runs and that's what you want out of your pitcher. Overall it was little things like that which I noticed and we need to improve on. Still we got the win and will move on to the next game.”
It is the first time CBU has recorded a shutout in its opening game of the NAIA National Tournament. The Lancers play tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. (PST) against Holy Names. Holy Names lost its first game to Olivet Nazarene Thursday, 9-3. The Lancers defeated Holy Names earlier in the year 14-0. CBU will then finish pool play Saturday against Olivet Nazarene at 4 p.m. (PST).
CBU improves to 59-2 on the year while Midland Lutheran falls to 29-24.
