Berkeley, Calif. --- The California Baptist women's water polo team fell 16-8 to No. 3 Cal in their season opener. The Lancers loss however, was an indication of the direction the program is headed. CBU held its own as they scored eight times against a perennial national contender.
“We got those first game jitters out against a really good team,” said Head Coach Jacob Medina. “In years past we usually started with an easy one, but I was pleased with [the team].”
Senior Kylie Chevalier, last season's assist leader (38), tallied three goals while Sophmore Brittany Bateman added two.
“We put goals in,” said Medina. “That's what I was most nervous about.”
The Lancers excelled in the 6-on-5 game in both ends of the pool. CBU went 4-6 and held the Golden Bears to just 3-9 in 6-on-5 opportunities.
The Lancers inside game was strong as Molly Gritchen and Kim Latschaw combined to draw five ejections.
Goalie Camryn Rogers had a blocked 5-meter and three steals, while many of the goals she gave up were on fastbreaks.
“She did well. A lot of the time she was left out to dry, but she always holds her own in the cage,” said Medina.
The Lancers will stay up north for the Berkeley Invite. They will play two NCAA Division II schools: Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay.
“We're excited to be playing two D-II schools because that's where we're going to be next year...They both should be really good games,” said Medina.
CBU faces Sonoma State at 2:15 p.m. and closes day one of the invite against East Bay at 7:30 p.m.
