RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Each game went five innings, but they must have felt like an eternity to the visiting Mayville State, as No. 1 California Baptist University handed the Comets 11-0 and 24-0 losses in a doubleheader sweep.
The Lancers scored 15 runs in the first inning of the nightcap alone, en route to their largest offensive outburst of the season. CBU scored 17 runs against William Jessup earlier in the season, but had surpassed that before there was even a single out in the second inning of the late game.
“The score looked good in the first game, but I thought we weren't quite playing as well as we could have,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “I said something about it in between games and the girls really responded. Once they started hitting I just backed off and let them do their thing and they just kept going.”
The Lancers went through their lineup nearly three times in the first inning as Smith began making substitutions with one out in the inning.
“Danae (Leiser) was the only one I couldn't get an at bat for and that's only because she is hurt,” said Smith, who played every healthy player on his roster.
The Lancers' pitching staff was more than proficient as well, with Emma Holden and Tory Ferreira combining for the no-hit shutout in the opener and Courtney McGee throwing four innings to get her second win of the season in the late game. Ferreira also pitched another scoreless inning to finish off the night, thanks to a brilliant throw to the plate from center-field by Marshean August to end the game. Holden moves to 8-0 with her win.
Mara Rodriguez led the hit parade for the Lancers, going 2-for-3 with seven RBI and four runs scored in the nightcap. She smashed two three-run home runs in the game to give her three on the season. Rodriguez also went 1-for-1 with an RBI in the opener.
“We have to find a way to keep getting her at bats,” said Smith. “Mara can definitely be a superstar player for us, she just needs to believe that.”
Kendall Gorham had the only other long ball on the day, as CBU's career leader added to her total with her sixth of the season. Gorham was 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored on the day. Starr White also had four RBI for the Lancers and scored three runs.
Thirteen different Lancers got hits in the doubleheader and nine players had multiple RBI. As a team CBU hit .545 on the day.
The Lancers move to 17-0 on the season with the two victories, while the Comets fall to 0-6 to start their season. The Lancers are the third straight Top 10 opponent Mayville State has faced in the past four days.
“It's a good start to the season so far for us, but we have some tough games coming up,” said Smith, as the Lancers host No. 8 Cal State San Marcos Saturday. “They are a tough team who we have developed a good rivalry with. Dave Williams has built a good ball club and they always play us tough.”
CSUSM has handed CBU two of its nine losses over the past two seasons. The Lancers and Cougars play at 12 p.m. Saturday.
