RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In their only game of the day the California Baptist women's water polo team defeated CSUSB 12-6 in a match marred by penalties and ejections.
The Lancers (4-2) were issued nine ejections and whistled for one 5-meter penalty (which was blocked by Camryn Rogers). CSUSB (2-3) also felt the brunt of the whistle as they notched nine ejections and two 5-meters.
Kylie Chevalier won the opening sprint and quickly scored a 6-on-5 goal before Molly Gritchen posted the earliest of her three first half goals. CSUSB answered back with 6-on-5 goals by Jennifer Goetz and Misty Vu and appeared ready to avenge its 11-4 loss to CBU in 2010.
The Lancers however, got Gritchen's second goal of the quarter followed by a last-second score by Petra Kovacs to end the first ahead 4-2. The second quarter began with Grtichen's third goal of the half followed by a fast break score by Doris Tran to give CBU a 6-2 lead. The Coyotes added a goal to keep the match within reach at 6-3 before the second quarter horn blew.
In the third it took nearly five minutes for either team find the back of the net before Tania Acavedo sparked a barrage of Lancer goals. CBU scored three times (twice by Mallory Montano) in a two-minute span to give the home team a 9-3 advantage and end the Coyotes chances for a comeback.
The two squads traded goals in the fourth, but the Coyotes never got back within striking distance. The Lancers improve to 4-2 on the season with their third straight win at the Lancer Aquatic Center.
CBU went three for seven in 6-on-5 opportunities, but allowed CSUSB to go 4-9. Both goalies notched 5-meter saves as Rogers blocked Misty Vu's penalty shot and the Coyote's NCAA Div. II All-American, Bryanna Burns, stopped Gritchen's attempt.
Rogers had two saves, two assists, and two steals in the match and allowed the majority of goals she allowed were on fast breaks or in 6-on-5 situations. Kovacs and Nicole Berry had two scores apiece.
CBU heads back to the Lancer Aquatic Center aiming for their fourth straight win on Feb. 9 against Hartwick.
