HAWKS DOWN LANCERS
2/9/2011 11:06:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In a game of back-and-forth scoring the California Baptist women's water polo team couldn't convert on its last second attempt in a 10-11 loss to No. 14 Hartwick College (NY). Molly Gritchen's would-be fifth goal of the match sailed left of the goal as the Hawks gave the Lancers (4-3) their first home loss of the season.
The match began with a goal by Gritchen, but Hartwick (2-3) stormed back with two scores by Sami Caparelli to end the first quarter ahead 2-1. CBU, however, bounced back with goals by Gritchen, Petra Kovacs, and Christina Webb to knot the match at 4-4 to end the half. Neither team led by more than two at any point.
The third quarter began with a quick steal and fast break goal by Hartwick's Jessica McKee, then seconds later Gritchen scored her third of the match to tie it 5-5. The teams alternated scores in the nine-goal quarter with the Hawks getting the advantage at 9-8 heading to the final eight minutes.
After another prompt goal by Hartwick, Kylie Chavlier and Webb found the back of the net to equal the scores at 10 apiece. With just under three minutes to go Hartwick's Allyssa Analytis surprised everyone with a no-look shot that found its way past goalie Camryn Rogers. The goal proved to be enough as CBU couldn't add another despite shots by Mallory Montano and Gritchen. The loss extends the Lancer's losing streak to six against Hartwick, including an 0-4 all-time mark at the Lancer Aquatic Center.
Both goalies had solid matches, with Rogers tallying nine saves, two steals, and an assist. The Hawk's all-time saves leader, Jessica Dorman, had 11 stops on the day, including two late blocks.
CBU struggled in the 6-on-5 game, converting only three in 10 opportunities (.636 conversion percentage in 2011). The lancers also faltered on the defensive end, notching only four steals despite averaging over nine per game this season.
CBU had two players with multiple goals with Webb scoring twice while Grtichen nabbed her third hat trick of the year with four goals. Other CBU scorers included: Kylie Chevalier, Petra Kovacs, Nicole Berry, and Mallory Montano.
The Lancers will face the No. 2 Trojans at USC on Saturday. It will be the second time this season the women's water polo team has faced a ranked opponent.
