RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The California Baptist women's water polo team had little trouble in the first two home matches of the 2011 season.  CBU crushed Vanguard (0-6) 19-2 before putting together a 9-4 win over Redlands (3-1) on the first day of the Lancer Invite.
“It was good to come back and execute after that Cal weekend,” said Head Coach Jacob Medina after his team went 1-2 in Berkeley.
Molly Gritchen scored five times on the day, while Christina Webb added four.
In the first match CBU faced off against Vanguard's first ever women's polo team. Gritchen opened the match with two quick goals as five Lancers notched first quarter scores. The Lions appeared to be overwhelmed as they fell back 9-0 early in the second quarter.
Vanguard ended the run with a goal by Allesandro Sanchez, but that was as close as they would get. Seven Lancers scored multiple goals while 10 total CBU players found the back of the net.
Kylie Chevalier scored a goal and posted three assists and one steal in limited time. Petra Kovacs had two goals and two assists (both in the first quarter). 20 Lancers played in the match.
CBU's second match was much closer early on. The Lancers appeared to be on their way to another route as Gritchen opened with a fast break goal before Webb added another to jump ahead 2-0 early on. Redlands, however, bounced back with a 5-meter goal by All-American Jaime Nippert. Jill Stein then knotted the match at twos with 1:33 left in the first half.
Webb sparked a 4-0 CBU run with a 6-on-5 goal. The Lancers got scores from Kovacs, Gritchen and Brittany Bateman before forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout. Nippert scored her second goal of the match to give Redlands hope, but Chevalier dashed the visitors' hopes with a net of her own to give CBU a 7-3 advantage.
The Lancers ended up winning 9-4 to improve to 3-2 on the season. CBU scored 28 goals in the two matches while giving up just six. Camryn Rogers had just three saves on the day, as she sat most of the Vanguard match. Backup keeper Kristen Post tallied seven saves in three quarters against the Lions.
CBU had 15 steals and held its two opponents to 3-15 in 6-on-5 opportunities.
“Our defense has played really today,” said Medina. “In fact that's been our strength all year.”
The Lancers will finish the weekend against Cal State San Bernardino at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday.
