CLAREMONT, Calif.--- Petra Kovacs scored nine goals as the California Baptist women's water polo team posted a pair of wins on day one of the Claremont Convergence. Kovacs, who is coming off shoulder surgery in November, has been a force for CBU (12-7) all season, scoring three or more goals in the last eight games.
In game one the Lancers faced off against Occidental (10-4). The Tigers entered the weekend as the top-ranked team in NCAA Div. III, and gave the Lancers trouble in CBU's 11-8 win. Kovacs scored five in the match and added three assists while Mallory Montano drew six ejections.
Camryn Rogers notched 11 saves as Morgan Barrows and Alyssa Birch each tallied two assists. Christina Webb scored three goals to post her fifth hat trick of the season. Molly Gritchen, Doris Tran, and Barrows each added a goal as CBU broke its two game skid.
Game two for the Lancers was well contested throughout the first three quarters as the Cal Lutheran Regals (6-9) trailed by just two (8-6) heading into the fourth quarter. The Lancers then closed the match on a 4-1 run to win 12-7. Kovacs found the back of the net four times in the match, and Webb notched her second straight hat trick.
Rogers had a busy match in the cage. The junior blocked 14 shots to combine for 25 saves on the day. Birch scored two goals while Kylie Chevalier, Montano, and Gritchen each scored for CBU.
