RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University scored a pair of victories in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon, as the Lancers got a perfect game and a two walk-off wins.
Emma Holden was untouchable in Saturday's opener, leading CBU to an 8-0 victory over No. 13 Dickinson State. Things got much tenser in the late game, as the Lancers were one out away from defeat before pulling out a 4-3 victory in the eighth inning against British Columbia.
“I can't say enough about what the girls did today,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “They showed a never say die attitude and were able to come through in the clutch. Emma was brilliant in that first game against a really good team, too. She always pitches great, but really turns it up a notch against good teams.”
Holden threw five innings without giving up a walk or a hit Saturday. It was the Lancer ace's second no-hit performance of the season and her first perfect game of 2011. Holden came in to finish off the late game and thanks to the heroics of her teammates moves to 13-1 on the year with two victories.
Tina Galinato, who played a huge part in the finales of both games, capped a six-run surge in the fifth inning, with a three-run game-ending homer, that found its way on to the tennis courts over the right field fence.
“The offense really saved me today,” said Holden. “Ending the first game in five and then picking me up for the win in the second game. It's great to know I have them and that they have my back whether I'm pitching well or not.”
CBU hit four home runs in the opener. Briana Corral and Kendall Gorham each hit solo-shots, and Mara Rodriguez hit a two-run homer. Galinato started and ended the scoring, driving in four of CBU's eight runs in the game in Saturday's early game.
“We always have good, tough games with Dickinson, so the girls were fired up for that one,” said Smith. “Sara Jane Webster is a good pitcher. For us to hit like that against her is something.”
Things were not nearly as smooth-sailing in the late game, as British Columbia chased starter Tory Ferreira early and took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning.
Leigh Della Siega had the Lancer hitters off balance nearly the entire game and looked to be on her way to the seventh with a lead after getting the first two batters of the sixth out with ease. Caty Reeves got the Lancers back in it with one swing of the bat, however, hitting a deep solo home run to left field on a 2-2 count.
Smith then sent his ace back out to the circle to hold the tie, but Tanya McLean had other plans, putting the one blemish on Holden's near perfect day with a blast to left.
With their backs against the wall, the first two Lancer hitters popped out in foul territory. Galinato was CBU's last hope when she lifted the 1-1 pitch deep into the evening sky and over the right field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
“It was kind of nerve racking going up there with two outs,” said Galinato. “I had been getting good cuts off her though so I felt good. She threw me inside and I was just able to hit it out.”
CBU was unable to complete the comeback in regulation and the game moved to the eighth inning. With a runner placed on second to begin extra innings the thunderbirds immediately laid down the sacrifice bunt. The next batter lifted a fly ball into foul territory down the left field line and Gorham camped under it. She made the catch and with the runner tagging from third, fired a strike to the plate to get the double play and end the inning.
After making the spectacular defensive play, Gorham was placed on second and it was the Lancers' turn to execute the sacrifice. Sloan McHann laid down a perfect bunt to the right side and raced toward first. In a rush to get the runner, the thunderbird catcher made an errant throw to first, allowing Gorham to round third and score the game winning run.
“Their pitcher had us off balance and we were not taking good swings for most of that game,” said Smith. “We finally got some balls down in the zone and Caty and Tina hit a couple of huge home runs. It really came down to small ball, though. We got the bunt down, they made a mistake and we won. Those are the kind of things that happen when you execute the fundamentals.”
Rodriguez and Galinato each had four hits on the day for CBU. Galinato led the team with five RBI and Rodriguez drove in three.
With the two wins CBU moves to 26-1. The Lancers face Dickinson State again on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
