IRVINE, Calif--- After suffering one of the worst losses all season the California Baptist women's water polo team bounced back to post one of its strongest wins this year.
The Lancers (18-10) lost 17-4 to No. 13 UC Irvine in the first match, but notched a 10-2 win over Concordia in the nightcap.
“[The first game] should have been closer…It was probably the worst we played all year,” said Head Coach Jacob Medina. “It was a bad combo...we played a bad game against a really good team.”
CBU fell into an early 4-0 hole against the Anteaters and didn't score until Irvine went up 6-0. The Lancers had three goals in the second quarter after being shut out in the first, but let the home team find the back of the net 10 times in the opening half.
With the game well out of reach CBU scored just one goal in the third and fourth to finish with four scores compared to Irvine's 17. The 13-goal loss was the second biggest margin of defeat for the Lancers this season; the team lost 19-4 against the No. 2 Trojans of USC on Feb. 12.
Petra Kovacs, Kim Latschaw, Alyssa Birch, and Rachel Easu each scored once while Camryn Rogers finished with nine saves.
In the second match the lancers looked like an entirely different team against a Concordia squad that took CBU to overtime earlier in the year.
The Lancers had little trouble in the first half as they jumped on top of the Eagles 6-0 at the break. CBU then added another goal in the third quarter before Concordia got the ball past Rogers twice to head into the final eight minutes with the score at 7-2.
The Lancers kept the shooting going with three goals in the final period and held the Eagles scoreless for the rest of the match to finish with a 10-2 win.
“It was nice…especially after last time,” said Medina.
Exactly one month ago the Lancers struggled to a 9-8 OT win at home against the same Concordia team they blew out on the road.
Kovacs posted four goals while teammate Molly Gritchen finished with a hat trick. Rogers compiled seven saves and blanked the Eagles in three of the four quarters. Mallory Montano, Christina Webb, and Briana Tryon all added one score as the Lancers grabbed their thirteenth straight win vs. Concordia.
Both teams faltered in the 6-on-5 game with CBU finishing just 1-5 and the Eagles converting an abysmal 1-8.
This weekend the Lancers will play in the Road Runner invite in Bakersfield where they'll face three NCAA Div. I teams, including a rematch against No. 16 Hartwick.
CBU fell 10-11 to Hartwick at the Lancer Aquatic Center earlier in the year.
