BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--- The California Baptist women's water polo team won its 20th game of the season while Petra Kovacs scored her 80th goal of the year in a two-game sweep on day one of the Roadrunner Invitational.
In the first Match CBU defeated Cal State Bakersfield 16-14 thanks to five goals from Kovacs. The junior added six more in the Lancers' 14-7 win over Brown to improve to 20-10 on the year.
In the opener the Lancers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with three scores from Kovacs and one by Mallory Montano.
Bakersfield fought back with two straight goals before Kim Latschaw capped the first quarter with her first of the match to give CBU a 5-2 lead after eight minutes.
Kovacs opened the second with her fourth score, followed by a goal by Molly Gritchen to give the Lancers their biggest lead of the game. The Roadrunners responded with a 4-1 run that extended into the third quarter.
Then with just over three minutes left in the period Christina Webb notched the first of her three scores in a three minute span. CBU led 12-9 heading into the final quarter.
Morgan Barrows scored to give the Lancers a somewhat comfortable lead at 13-10, but Bakersfield quickly tallied two goals to make it a one possession contest with 3:09 remaining.
But with the score at 15-13 Montano found the back of the net for her fourth score of the match to seal the 16-14 Lancer win.
Three CBU players had hat tricks (Kovacs, Webb, Montano) while seven scored at least one goal. Camryn Rogers tallied seven saves and Montano drew six ejections.
There was a bit of bad news for the Lancers as CBU's all-time assists leader, Kylie Chevalier, along with Alyssa Birch were injured in the win and unable to play in the second match.
Fortunately their teammates took care of Brown with a 14-7 win. Kovacs posted three steals in addition to her six goals, while Tania Acavedo scored twice in the game. Webb scored two goals, while Montano notched her fourth score of the day to go with her three steals.
The Lancers will face Pomona Pitzer and Hartwick in day two of the Roadrunner Invitational.
