FULLERTON, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University got six RBI from Kendall Gorham and escaped with a pair of victories against Hope International Tuesday afternoon.
Gorham hit a pair of homers, including a two-out grand slam that broke a scoreless tie in the second game. CBU won the opener 3-0 and the late game 8-1, to move to 39-1 overall, 4-0 GSAC.
“It wasn't exactly pretty, but we got a couple of conference wins which is what matters,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “Kendall was huge today and Starr White had a great game too. It wasn't our best hitting day and these games were closer than they should have been. It's one of those days you're happy to get the wins and you move on.”
White led the team with five hits, scoring one run and driving in another.
Gorham drove in the day's first run with an RBI single in the first inning of the opener and then hit a solo shot in the third to put CBU up 2-0. White also hit an RBI single in the inning to give the Lancers the 3-0 lead.
Emma Holden had yet another brilliant outing, giving up just two hits and striking out eight to move to 20-1 on the season. It was Holden's fifth complete game shutout of the year.
White opened the fourth inning of the day's second game with a single, and after Tina Galinato and Briana Corral walked, Gorham again broke open the scoring with her second homer of the day. She leads the team with 13 on the season.
Lindsay Henry topped the day off with a three-run homer in the sixth to seal CBU's 8-1 win.
The Royal's lone run was scored on a questionable call on a ball hit down the third base line in the fourth inning.
Tory Ferreira threw six innings, giving up just the one run and striking out a season-high eight batters. Ferreira scattered six hits over her six innings, to earn her 11th win of the year. Courtney McGee got the final inning of work to preserve the win.
The Lancers keep the Royals winless in conference play, dropping them to 12-19 overall and 0-6 GSAC.
Tuesday's doubleheader was one of four scheduled this week for the Lancers. CBU hosts No. 12 Columbia tomorrow.
“This week is definitely one that can prepare us for the national tournament,” said Smith. “We just have to stay focused and take it game by game. The girls are always prepared for tough competition. The will be ready for tomorrow.”
After facing the Cougars, the Lancers will make up their postponed doubleheader with No. 22 Biola Friday and then face Vanguard Saturday.
