TEMPE, Ariz. --- California Baptist University dropped a pair of games in Arizona to two highly ranked NCAA Division I opponents.
CBU fell 17-5 to No. 3 UCLA in the afternoon game Saturday and then lost to host, No. 7 Arizona State 16-7.
CBU had its closest game of the day against the Sun Devils, taking a 2-2 tie into the second quarter.
Petra Kovacs and Christina Webb each scored in the opening period and then Alyssa Birch matched an ASU goal to open the third to keep the game even at 3-3. The Sun Devils held a 6-4 lead going into the half.
The second half was all ASU, though, as the home team outscored the Lancers 6-1 in the third quarter.
Kovacs scored four of the Lancers' five goals against the Bruins, but it was not enough to overcome a balanced UCLA attack. The Bruins had five players score multiple goals in the game and were led by Becca Dorst with four goals.
The Lancers fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter and were never able to climb back in the contest.
CBU falls to 10-7 with the two losses. The Lancers are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Claremont Convergence tournament.
