RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 1 California Baptist University's sweep of Biola Tuesday night was highlighted by a pair of big time home runs, including a walk-off shot in the nightcap.
The Lancers took the opener 8-2, getting a grand slam from Lindsay Henry and then won Tuesday's finale in thrilling fashion as Sloan McHann blasted a three-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 5-2 victory. The homers were the 12th of the season for both players.
“We have been in a little bit of a funk lately, so hopefully this can get us going more,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “Games like this really test our team and that's what we need going down the stretch here as we come to the end of the conference season.”
The Lancers and Eagles were locked in a 2-2 tie for three innings, after Biola tied the game in the third inning on a solo home run from pitcher Cece Luster.
CBU had runners on base in three of the next four innings, but were not able to break through with a run until the seventh.
After Luster got two quick ground outs to open the seventh, Briana Corral nearly ended the game on her own, ripping a double off the wall in right-center. After four straight balls to Kendall Gorham, McHann stepped up and launched the first pitch she saw to deep left-center.
“That was a very similar situation to what we had at the end of the Azusa Pacific game the other day,” said Smith. “This time Kendall did a good job not chasing any pitches and Sloan really stepped up. That was a big time homer from her.”
Courtney McGee, who entered the ball game in the seventh inning, took the win to move to 7-0. McGee worked her way out of a jam to keep the score tied, inducing a ground out with runners on second and third.
Tory Ferreira got the start for the Lancers throwing six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, while striking out seven, before exiting in the seventh.
The opening game of the day opened with each team scoring a run in the first, before CBU knocked in three in the second on an RBI single by Corral and a two-run triple by Gorham.
Henry stepped up and put the game out of reach with her slam in the fifth to cap the scoring for the Lancers.
Emma Holden improved her record to 25-1 with her six innings of four-hit ball. Holden struck out six and gave up two runs.
The Lancers move to 50-2 overall, 13-1 GSAC, while Biola falls to 24-22, 5-9. CBU will host their final regular-season home games of the year this Saturday as Hope International comes to town.
