COSTA MESA, Calif. --- In a surprising twist of fate, No. 1 California Baptist University has No. 19 Azusa Pacific to thank for the team's eighth-straight Golden State Athletic Conference title.
Even after suffering just its third loss of the season in a split with Vanguard, No. 1 California Baptist University locked up yet another GSAC regular-season crown, after the Cougars swept No. 4 Concordia.
The Lancers opened the day with a 5-0 win over the Lions, then dropped the finale, 3-2, on a three-run double by Kaysie Flasck. The Lancers hold a three game lead in the conference standings with just two games remaining, following the Eagles' 6-5 and 2-1 losses to APU.
“It's disappointing that we can't celebrate this championship after a win,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “The loss puts a damper on things, but it's still a great testament to the team. Eight in a row says a lot about our teams over the years.”
The Lancers opened the scoring on the day, getting a sacrifice fly and two-run double by Tina Galinato in the second inning of the opener.
Mara Rodriguez added another run with a solo-shot in the third and Sloan McHann hit an RBI single in the seventh.
Emma Holden made the lead stand up in what turned out to be the GSAC Championship clinching game. Holden threw seven brilliant innings, giving up just two hits and striking out 10.
Holden's 10 k's gives the junior 607 in her illustrious career, passing Candice Thomas' career record. Holden not only becomes the Lancers' career leader, but her 251 strikeouts this year sets a new single-season mark, breaking Jamie Beaty's record which stood for nine years.
“It is really crazy to be mentioned along with CBU greats like them,” said Holden. “It feels so great to achieve this, but I wish I could share the record with Shoe (Nicole Shoemaker) and (Caty) Reeves who really strike out the batters because they know what pitch to throw. I just put the ball where they want it. I'm very thankful for the talent God has given me, but what I want more than records is a national championship.”
Holden moves to 27-1 on the season and leads the GSAC with a 0.74 ERA, as she continues to make a strong case for NAIA Pitcher of the Year.
“Emma has worked so hard and this is really a testament to how great a pitcher she is,” said Smith. “Every time she goes out there we know we have a chance to win. The fact that she broke this record in just three years is amazing.”
In the late game CBU struck first, with McHann singling in a run in the third inning.
Tory Ferreira held the Lion offense in check most of the game, but after a leadoff walk in the fifth, Vanguard loaded the bases and chased Ferreira from the game. Flasck greeted new pitcher Courtney McGee with a bases-clearing double, putting the Lions on top 3-1.
The Lancers answered with a run in the sixth inning on Rodriguez's second homer of the day, but could not knock in the tying run after that.
“We really aren't playing CBU softball right now,” said Smith. “Even though we have clinched the title, we need to treat these next games like they are the postseason.”
CBU moves to 53-3 overall, 16-2 GSAC, while Vanguard moves to 22-26, 3-15. The Lancers close the regular season April 28, against Concordia.
