RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Strong pitching and timely offense, plus a little help from the La Sierra defense, led California Baptist University to two wins on Tuesday night. The Lancers won game one, 5-2, and took the second game, 9-2.
The first game was tight early until Mara Rodriguez stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. After Kailey Willingham walked, April Vasquez reached on an error and Danae Leiser reached on a bunt single the bases were loaded for Rodriguez.
She stepped up to the plate and knocked all three of them in to put the Lancers up 3-0. She then stole third and scored off of a throwing error by La Sierra's catcher.
Jessica Avila was dominant in six shutout innings against the Golden Eagles in game one, holding them to four hits and picking up four strikeouts on her way to her 12th win of the season.
CBU picked up its fifth run in the sixth inning off of Rachel Meyer's 12th home run of the year, a blast to right center.
Meyer, Marshean August and Jordan Mowatt each picked up two hits in the game.
Game two is where the action got a lot more interesting; to the tune of five hit batters, two errors, a near no-hitter and a few wild pitches.
Rodriguez picked up right where she left off after game one, hitting a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the first.
The Lancers hit around in the first inning, picking up five runs on two different Golden Eagle pitchers.
August had her second 2-4 game of the day, and Rodriguez also went 2-4, scoring one run and picking up her fourth RBI of the day.
Belinda Renne had an unconventional no-hitter all the way into the top of the fifth, but a single right to the second base bag broke it up.
Savannah Miller improved upon her team-leading batting average by going 3-4 in the nightcap. She picked up RBI doubles in the first inning, fourth inning and sixth innings.
Renne allowed two earned runs in six innings and picked up her fifth win on the year.
The Lancers sweep of this non-conference doubleheader leaves them with an 18-13 overall record as they move on to face Grand Canyon in a doubleheader on Friday. The Golden Eagles drop to 4-25.
