Eleven Lancers Earn Elite ACWPC Academic Award

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Academic awards continued rolling in for California Baptist University, as the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches released their 2014 All-Academic accolades Thursday evening.
Thirteen Lancers were named to the All-Academic Golden Coast Conference Team Monday, and 11 of those standouts added a national honor for their hard work in the classroom from the ACWPC. CBU also distinguished itself nationally, as it posted the 18th highest grade-point average as a team, with a 3.16.
ACWPC All-Academic awards are given away in three tiers: outstanding, superior and excellent. The majority of Lancers, seven in all, fell into the top tier by posting a GPA between 4.00 and 3.71. Superior students fall between a 3.70 and 3.41 and excellent honorees log a 3.40 to 3.20.
Alyssa Birch, Jessica Castellano, Sydney Iturraran, Courtney Menard, Meghan Rowland, Valerie Spezzaferri and Christina Young all picked up the outstanding label. Morgan Barrows, Hannah Evans and Raine Paul earned superior status, with Molly Gritchen distinguishing herself as excellent.
This year continued CBU's history of success in the ACWPC academic realm. They have produced 84 ACWPC All-Academic honorees over 10 years, with 40 coming over the past four years. This also marked repeat awards for nine of the 11 Lancers.
It was the third ACWPC All-Academic distinction for Paul, a junior, and Birch, a senior. Iturraran, Menard, Rowland, Young, Barrows, Evans and Gritchen also picked up their second awards, with Iturraran, Evans, Menard and Rowland doing it as sophomores.
