CBU VS. HARTWICK BOX SCORES
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- In its first Lancer Mini Invite of the season, California Baptist University received two big performances from its goalie Meghan Rowland.
Even in an 8-2 loss to the 11th-ranked Matadors of Cal State Northridge, the keeper had eight great saves in the cage. Rowland turned it on in the Lancers' nightcap against Hartwick. While her 10 saves against the Hawks were certainly impressive, she will likely never forget the miraculous fourth-quarter goal she scored in CBU's 11-6 victory that ended the invite.
The Lancers moved their record to 2-6 on the day, with six different Lancers scored in two games: Hannah Evans, Jessica Castellano, Paizlee Dreyer, Kaitlyn Persky, Valerie Spezzaferri, Samantha Banks and of course Rowland.
Still, the Hawks were able to grab a one-goal lead in the first quarter, 2-1, and maintain that lead at halftime, 4-3. Despite goals from Spezzaferri, Dreyer and Persky in the first, the Lancers were in need of a big second half to pull through.
CBU used a 3-1 third-quarter run to take a 6-5 lead on Hartwick with eight minutes remaining. Evans broke through and scored twice in the third and Dreyer also scored her second goal of the contest to give the Lancers a lead.
"It was good to see us get some of our confidence back in the second half," Coach Jonathan Miller said. "We knew their style of defense was going to be a challenge for us, but everybody stepped up and made plays down the stretch to close it out."
Things only got better from there, as CBU scored five goals in the fourth. Evans scored two more to finish the game with four goals and five on the day overall. Spezzaferri and Banks also got on the board in the fourth, but the Lancers had a surprise waiting for them when Rowland scored the first goal of her career at CBU.
"The first half we came a little bit slow but in the second half we came out really strong playing like a team and coming together," Rowland said. "The highlight was scoring from half court, because I've never scored as a goalie. I'm still on cloud nine from it."
Evans and Castellano each scored in the Lancers' first game of the day against Cal State Northridge, but Rowland had the highlight performance in that game -- this time it was on defense only, as she recorded eight tough saves.
CBU returns home to host USC and Redlands on February 13th and the second Lancer Mini Invite of the season the following day.
