RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The first NCAA Division II West Region poll came out on Wednesday, but was missing California Baptist University in the eight-team list. With only six of the top-eight teams going to the regional tournament, each remaining game in the regular season is important if the Lancers have hopes of getting back to the postseason tournament.
CBU fought hard, but couldn't top Dixie State Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 in overtime.
Chaylin Couzens gave the Lancers their first real look on offense in the 14th minute, sending a long-range shot toward the back post. The shot just curved a little too much to the right, however, but had the height to get past the Red Storm goalkeeper.
The Lancers looked to capitalize in the 25th minute as Dixie State had some miscommunication between the goalkeeper and defense, but CBU couldn't get a shot off in the scramble.
CBU had two chances at a wide-open net, but one hit the crossbar and the other went over the frame. Kayla Anderson had the first chance, firing a shot off the crossbar just seven minutes before halftime.
The Lancers continued to create chances, looking like they'd walk away with the win before even heading into extra time, but couldn't find the back of the net. With less than 20 seconds left in the second half, Couzens' header was just too high of the open goal, forcing overtime.
Extra time didn't go in favor of the Lancers, however, as the Red Storm tucked in the golden goal off a corner kick in the 98th minute.
CBU doesn't get much time to regroup, heading to Fresno for a Saturday kickoff at 5:00 p.m.

"We were dominate on the day," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "There are no easy games in our league. Our defense was solid as usual and offensively we created some great scoring opportunities that their keeper made some very good saves. Soccer is a humbling game sometimes, the best team doesn't always win — it comes down to execution. We needed to be a bit sharper around the goal today."
The Lancers drop to 5-7-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the PacWest.
