RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- California Baptist University took charge in its two games of the second Lancer Mini Invite on Saturday with a 19-3 win over the Tigers of Occidental College and 12-4 victory over the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Lancers started strong against the Tigers when Hannah Evans netted three goals in the first period. Evans scored two goals back-to-back with only two minutes in the game and found herself scoring the third goal of the period with four minutes remaining. The Tigers responded with their first goal of the game to cut the margin to 3-1.
Jessica Castellano started the second quarter scoring two goals in the first four minutes of the frame. Paizlee Dreyer scored consecutive goals of her own after that, with Samantha Banks and Raine Paul following suit. With only .8 of a second remaining in the second period, Paul scored her second goal of the quarter.
As if the second period couldn't get any better, the Lancers scored another seven goals on the Tigers. Dreyer, Paul, Evans and Mallory Montano contributed to the run, with Montano scoring two in that span. Kaitlyn Persky added another goal with .10 of a second left to put the score way out of reach, 17-1, at the end of the third.
CBU increased its lead in the final quarter when Alyssa Rodriguez and Annie Eubanks finished up the final quarter to give the Lancers the 19-3 victory against the Tigers.
"I thought the defensive effort in both games was great, and it really fed into our offense," Coach Jon Miller said. "Everybody stepped up and gave us good minutes."
During the second match of the day, the Lancers kept rolling and were able to take their second win of the night, defeating the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 12-4.
Within the first three minutes of the match, Valerie Spezzaferri and Banks scored back-to-back, while Paul helped end the first period with the Lancers leading 3-0.
Courtney Menard started the scoring for CBU in the second period, helping her team pull in front 5-0. As the second period came to an end, the Lancers kept building on their cushion after Evans and Persky both netted goals to go way up, 7-0, at halftime.
CMS scored the first two goals of the frame as Persky, Spezzaferri and Castellano handed their team a 10-2 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
The Lancers took the final period as they scored two of the quarter's four goals, as they pulled away for the win against the Athenas ending the night 12-4.
"We still have lots to improve on but hopefully this weekend will give us some momentum going forward," Miller said.
The Lancers have a week to prepare for the Tina Finali Invite hosted by Cal Lutheran on Feb.27 in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
