RIVERSIDE, Calif. — As day one of the Lancer Invitational comes to an end at the Lancer Aquatics Center, California Baptist University takes home two wins against the Terriers of St. Francis, 14-3, and the Panthers of Chapman University, 14-3.
Senior Leticia Perez tallied eight saves and a steal against the Terriers while Meghan Rowland accumulated 18 saves in the nightcap, helping CBU improve to 12-8 on the season with the pair of victories.
CBU vs. St. Francis: 14-3
The Lancers broke open in their first match of the day against St. Francis College from the very first sprint thanks to Valerie Spezzaferri's snag. With only 30 seconds into the match, Hannah Evans scored the first goal. The Terriers responded but Spezaferri put the Lancers out in front 3-1 with a goal as her team jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first period — five of those goals coming from Evans.
CBU kept the offensive pressure on, scoring back-to-back goals as Jessica Castellano opened the period with a goal within the first 12 seconds and was quickly followed by a Spezzaferri goal. Sydney Iturraran netted a goal, followed by another from Spezzaferri, while Raine Paul and Castellano each contributed a pair of goals to bust open the game at 11-2 in favor of the Lancers at halftime.
Both Lancers and Terriers struggled to get any action in the third period, but that turned around when Annie Eubanks netted her first goal of the match. In the last eight minutes of the match, Emily Cardona and Jocelyn Schwegler put the game away by each finding the back of the cage to give the home team the 14-3 victory against the Terriers.
CBU vs.Chapman: 14-3
In the night cap, the Lancers started strong in each of the periods, winning all four sprints.
Like it had in the first game, CBU had a productive first period as it scored five goals. Evans netted the first goal in the opening 20 seconds and was followed by a Paizlee Dreyer goal. Mallory Montano got in on the action with a goal on exclusion and was quickly followed by goals from both Castellano and Spezzaferri.
With less than a minute and a half remaining, the Panther's netted their first goal, but at the end of the first period, CBU had a comfortable 5-1 lead over the Panthers.
The Lancers kept raining in goals to take a commanding 10-1 cushion in the third after Spezzaferri, Montano, Evans, Iturraran and Paul each got in on the scoring action. There may have just been a second remaining on the clock in the third, but Paul squeaked in the 10th goal to put CBU very much in control of the game.
The Panthers scored their second goal of the match in the fourth, but it was quickly followed by two from the Lancers. Iturraran and Castellano each rattled in goals to put the home team up by 12-2.
Chapman desperately looked to find another point and found what it was looking for with its third goal in the final quarter, but wasn't enough to take home the victory. Eubanks scored back-to-back goals to help the Lancers secure the 14-3 win over the Panthers.
The Lancer Invitational continues Saturday March 14 at 9 a.m. CBU is back in action as it competes against Macalester College at 10:15 a.m and concludes the tournament with Virginia Military Institute at 7:00 p.m
