RIVERSIDE, Calif. — As the Lancer Invitational came to an end at the Lancer Aquatics Center Saturday, California Baptist University grabbed two home wins against Macalester College, 16-2, and Virginia Military Institute, 12-2, to improve to 14-8 on the season.
CBU vs. MACALESTER: 16-2
The Lancers began their Saturday morning picking up a 16-2 win over Macalester College. All four sprints in the match were won by different Lancers, while Leticia Perez accumulated 9 saves in the cage.
Just 17 seconds in the match, Hannah Evans netted her first goal against the Scots. CBU kept its foot on the throttle as five different Lancers scored to put CBU on a run. Spezzaferri, Courtney Mendard, Dreyer, Mallory Montano and Evans all got in the action to help their team take a comfortable 6-1 lead.
CBU continued its offensive prowess and took control of the second period when Samantha Banks, Paul and Kaitlyn Persky each found the back of the cage. The three goals opened up the Lancers lead to 9-1 against the Scots.
Macalester managed to score its second goal of the day, but was no match for the Lancers. Caroline Howard scored a goal in the third and Persky, Dreyer, Emily Cardona, Allie Coleman, Marnie Kavern and Amy Bideshi put the game away in the fourth. Each found the back of the cage to give the home team the 16-2 victory against the Scots.
CBU vs. VMI: 12-2
In the second game, the Lancers kept on rolling as Evans grabbed the first two goals of the match against the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute. With less than a minute remaining, Paul netted two goals at the cage to help her team lead 4-0.
As the Keydets fell behind, The Lancers keep their momentum in the second period as Castellano, Evans and Spezzaferri helped the Lancers lead 7-0.
In the third quarter, Montano and Banks both netted goals to give CBU a commanding 9-0 cushion, but the Keydets finally broke through the scoreless wall. A VMI goal in the last two minutes of the frame put the game at 9-1 heading into the final eight minutes.
Meghan Rowland sealed the 12-2 victory with two huge penalty stops in the fourth, making sure the Keydets had no hope for a come back.
The Lancers head to Los Angeles for a two-day tournament, March 20-21, competing against Princeton University, Michigan University and Whittier College during the Zumo LMU Invitational.
