CBU vs. Michigan
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- California Baptist University headed to Los Angeles for a two-day Zumo Invitational at Loyola Marymount. Facing two teams in or just outside the top-20 rankings, the Lancers hoped to work their way into the rankings.
CBU put together two impressive showings, but unfortunately fell to 10th-ranked Princeton and Michigan, which is receiving votes by a combined three goals. Princeton squeaked passed, 11-9, and Michigan eked out a 9-8 victory to move the Lancers' record to 14-10. Despite the losses, CBU received goals from Hannah Evans, Valerie Spezzaferri, Samantha Banks, Jessica Castellano and Paizlee Dreyer.
Meghan Rowland had a good day in the cage for CBU with a total of 20 saves, with 12 coming the Wolverines.
Opening the day against the Tigers, CBU got off to a quick start, with Evans scored the first three goals of the game, and Banks following her teammate's early hat trick with a tally of her own to give the Lancers a 4-1 lead.
As the second period came to an end, Castellano, Spezzaferri and Evans found the back of the cage to help CBU keep its lead, 7-4. Princeton had a big answer and compiled four unanswered goals in the third period to take an 8-7 edge. Evans scored in the fourth period, as did Castellano on an exclusion opportunity in the final 29 seconds, but Princeton held on for the 11-9 victory.
Once again, the Lancers battled it out till the very end, which included overtime, with the Wolverines.
Both teams scored back-to-back goals through the match and the first overtime period, with neither team ever leading by more than a goal.
The Wolverines scored first and carried a 3-2 lead after Evans netted two goals in the first quarter. Evans, Castellano and Spezzaferri led to CBU tying the game at 5-5 in the second quarter.
Both the Lancers and the Wolverines had one goal apiece in the third and fourth quarter to keep a 7-7 tie in place at the end of regulation.
During the first overtime, Dreyer scored with one second before the buzzer; but the Wolverines scored the lone goal in the second half of overtime to escape with a win.
The Lancers will end the two-day tournament, competing against Whittier, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Saturday morning.
