CBU vs. Whittier Box Score
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- After two battles with teams inside or right near the top-20 rankings in the NCAA, California Baptist University had another challenge ahead of it in Whittier College, the No. 1 team in Division III, to end the Zumo Invitational Saturday.
Goals from Hannah Evans, Kaitlyn Persky, Sydney Iturraran, Valerie Spezzaferri and Courtey Menard and nine saves from Meghan Rowland fueled CBU to a 13-11 victory and a 15-10 record on the year.
"Whittier was a fight the whole game, we had a four goal lead at half but foul trouble really hurt us in the second half," Coach John Miller said.
Persky scored the fist goal of the match within the first 30 seconds of the contest, while Evans scored two back-to-back goals. With 29 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Iturraran scored her first goal of the match to help the Lancers lead the Poets 4-3 going into the second.
Going into the half, Evans and Spezzaferri both netted a pair of goals, while Menard got in the action, to push CBU to a 9-5 cushion.
Iturraran was the only Lancer to scored in the third, while the Poets came back to tie the game. Evans and Spezzaferri got back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter to take home the 13-11 win over the Poets.
The Lancers are back in action at home on Thursday March 26 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m against Brown and Concordia .
