RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- It might have been a day early, but California Baptist University started its mission of sending its seniors out on a high note early versus Santa Clara Friday, less than 24 hours before Senior Day.
" It was a great team win, Everybody in the pool was contributing and the effort on the defensive end really fueled us," said head coach Jon Miller.
The Lancers did so with a lopsided 12-4 victory over Santa Clara in Golden Coast Conference action at the Lancer Aquatics Center. CBU dominated from start to finish, going on identical 6-2 runs in each half of play. The victory improves CBU to 18-11, 1-2 in conference this season. The Broncos fall to 13-11, 1-2. The final home game of the Lancers' season is Saturday at noon against Loyola Marymount in conference competition.
Hannah Evans scored a game-high four goals for the Lancers, notching a hat trick in the fourth quarter alone. Meghan Rowland continued the stellar play she's showed all season in the cage with eight saves. CBU showcased its balance with three other players scoring at least two goals -- Valerie Spezzaferri, Paizlee Dreyer, Jessica Castellano and Raine Paul.
Spezzaferri started the scoring for CBU, finding the back of the cage shortly after Evans drew an exclusion. The Lancers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a goal from Castellano, with Evans countering a Santa Clara goal with a converted penalty shot.
In the second quarter, Castellano opened the scoring in the fifth minute. From there, Paul started a 2-0 run of her own -- started with a beautiful lob shot -- to end the first half with the Lancers in front 6-2. Dreyer added to CBU's lead, 7-2, with a goal in the third quarter.
After a quiet third, Evans erupted over the final eight minutes. Spezzaferri started the fourth like she started the game, with a goal. It served as a precursor for Evans' three-straight goals, Dreyer capped the scoring late in the fourth to secure the 12-4 final score.
