RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In the final home game of the season, California Baptist University battled in a tightly contested loss to Loyola Marymount University, falling to the Lions 8-6.
"It was a tough game," Coach Jon Miller said. "We let them go on a quick run in the second quarter and put ourselves in a hole."
Leticia Perez and Meghan Rowland anchored the defense in the cage. Perez made three saves in the cage during the first two periods while Rowland finished the match with five blocks.
The Lancers gave LMU all it could handle, thanks to goals from Hannah Evans, Courtney Menard, Jessica Castellano, Raine Paul and Valerie Spezzaferri, but fell to 18-12, 1-3 in the Golden Coast Conference.
Within the first 30 seconds of the match, Evans netted the first goal but was followed by two Lion goals. With a second remaining on the clock, Menard helped the Lancers tie 2-2 against the LMU.
Less than four minutes into the second quarter, Castellano scored the only goal in the quarter for the Lancers, but it wasn't enough as the Lions carried a 7-3 lead into halftime.
With just 29 seconds in the third period, senior Paul netted her first goal of the match. Spezzaferri and Castellano got in the action as well, each scoring a goal for CBU to cut the margin to two goals, 8-6.
"I thought we fought back well in the third quarter but just couldn't find the goals we needed at the end," said Miller.
Neither team could get much going on in the final corner. Rowland made sure the Lions couldn't jump out further ahead as she stopped a penalty shot, but the Lancers ran out of time on offense to fall 8-6.
The Lancers head out on the road to conclude the regular season, traveling north to Pacific on Friday and then to Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
