Stockton, Calif. — With just two games left before postseason, California Baptist University headed north to close out the competition, taking on No. 14 University of Pacific.
The Lancers fell to 18-13 overall and 1-4 in the Golden Coast Conference with the close 12-11 loss against the Tigers on Friday afternoon. Pacific improves to 13-9 overall, 4-1 in conference with its seventh-straight win.
Four different Lancers got in on the scoring action as Jessica Castellano led CBU with five goals on the day. Paizlee Dreyer knocked in three, followed by two from Valerie Spezzaferri. Mallory Montano capped the scoring with one goal, while Meghan Rowland recorded 12 saves in the cage for CBU.
Within the first four minutes of the match, Dreyer struck first shot from seven meters away, tucking it past the hand of a defender into the net to help the Lancers take a 1-0 lead. Dreyer scored her second goal of the match not long after, but CBU found itself tied 2-2 with the Tigers after the first period.
Spezzaferri snuck one past the keeper on the first possession of the second quarter — just 32 seconds into the frame — to put the visitors back in front, 3-2, but the cushion didn't last long as Pacific scored two unanswered goals to take its first lead of the day, 4-3. Dreyer evened the game at 4-4 but CBU found itself trailing 6-4 against the Tigers after two quarters had finished.
The Lancers kept battling to get back their lead, but the Tigers kept them at bay, holding a 9-6 advantage after the third period. Spezzaferri took advantage of a man advantage to give CBU a goal on exclusion and Montano also found the back of the cage in the period.
CBU's most productive period came in the fourth quarter as Castellano scored three goals in the frame. Her first goal narrowed the gap to 10-9 with just four minutes left on the clock. Determined to keep their win streak intact, the Tigers found two more goals to hold a commanding three-point lead, 12-9. With 41 seconds left, Castellano netted a penalty shot to put the score at 12-10 and with two seconds on the clock, she scored once more, but the Lancers ran out of time to fall 12-11.
The Lancers head to Fresno on Saturday to compete against Fresno Pacific for the final regular-season matchup of 2015. Next week CBU returns to Stockton for the GCC Championship tournament, which begins on Thursday, April 23.
