RIVERSIDE, Calif. — While California Baptist University surprisingly found itself absent from the preseason NFCA rankings list, it didn't let that affect Opening Day as the Lancers grabbed two dominant wins Saturday.
CBU — which is receiving votes in the NCAA Division II poll — opened with a 16-3 mercy-rule (five innings) victory over Cal State San Marcos and followed it with a six-inning 8-0 win in the nightcap to start the season with a 2-0 mark. The Cougars, who opened their season the day before, drop to 2-2 on the year with the pair of losses.
After surrendering three runs in the top of the first, the Lancers exploded in their half of the inning to take an impressive 7-3 lead.
Krista Mann got things going right off the bat, singling up the middle to get on base. The Cougars managed to get her out, but it wasn't long before CBU loaded up the bases.
Jacque Lopez and Tayler Castro drew back-to-back walks to cut the margin to just one run, 3-2, before CSUSM could get a second out. Still, the Lancers weren't done as an illegal pitch advanced all three runners on base up a spot, scoring Lopez from third to tie the game.
Soraya Shahbazian stepped up to the plate and forced a Cougar error at third to score Castro. Jordan Mowatt followed with a single up the middle to score another Lancer runner, sending Mann to the plate for her second appearance in the inning. The junior blasted a line drive over the first baseman's head, dropping just inside the right field line for a three-run triple to give CBU a commanding 7-3 edge.
The Lancers cleaned up their defense to get back on offense in the bottom of the second, upping their lead to five runs. Erin Burkhart led the inning off by taking a rogue pitch to get a free ticket to first base. Hannah Thieroff joined her on base with a blooper over the pitcher that the shortstop couldn't get to. Lopez doubled to left center, allowing Burkhart to touch home, 8-3.
Mowatt kept momentum in favor of the Lancers by snagging a deep fly ball to left as the Lancer defense retired the Cougars in order.
With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third, Thieroff drew ball four to put the Lancers in front by six, 9-3. Lopez kept the scoring going, knocking her first pitch up the middle to score Sarah Murphy on third. Ali Subia singled up the middle to score two more Lancers before the Cougars made a pitching change.
CBU wasn't quite done, however, as Soraya Shahbazian and Mowatt each doubled to tack on three more runs, 15-3.
Kellye Springstead kept the Lancer defense going strong, giving CBU its third-straight inning where the home team retired the visitors in order. The freshman pitcher struck out the second two batters, her 12th-straight batters who didn't get on base.
The Lancers capped the scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Nicole Hennessey scored on a Haylee Tracy single to put pressure on CSUSM to score six runs to keep the game going. The Cougars couldn't do that, however, dropping the first game 16-3.
CBU looked to keep Opening Day going strong and opened the nightcap with two runs in the bottom of the first to jump out in front 2-0. Burkhart singled to score Mann and Lopez scored the junior off another base hit to make it 2-0.
Subia started the bottom of the second off in a huge way, blasting her first career home run over the fence at left to make it 3-0 in favor of CBU.
Lopez led off the third with a double for the Lancers and put herself in scoring position on third on a wild pitch. Vanessa Juarez then sacrificed a fly ball as Lopez tagged up at third to make it 4-0 Lancers.
Burkhart picked up her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Murphy from second with a double off the glove of the center fielder.
The Lancers sealed the victory in the fifth with two runs. Juarez knocked her first collegiate home run, tucking it over the fence and under the new scoreboard at right center, 6-0. Heather Smith and Mowatt put runners on first and second. Murphy laid down a hard-hit ball up the middle to score Smith, but CBU couldn't get the eighth run just yet.
Back on defense, the Lancers put the Cougars out in order, to go back on offense needing just one run to end the game early. Thieroff led off with a single up the middle. Castro took over the base running and was joined on base by Lopez. Subia found the gap in left center to score Castro, ending the game 8-0.
CBU hits the road for the next two weeks, heading to the Desert Stinger Tournament next weekend in Las Vegas. The Lancers begin the tournament against some tough competition, taking on No. 19 Sonoma State first on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11:30 a.m. and No. 20 Augustana right after that.
