LAS VEGAS — After finding itself off the preseason National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NCAA Division II rankings, the Lancers had a statement to make Friday: don't forget about us.
Not only did the Lancers beat two ranked opponents, they did so in mercy-rule fashion. CBU first upset No. 19 Sonoma State 13-2 in six innings and followed with an 11-2 win (also in six innings) over No. 20 Augustana. To cap the night, the Lancers grabbed another eight-run rule victory over Concordia-St. Paul, 10-2, in four and a half innings.
The wins move CBU to 5-0 overall. SSU opened the season 0-2, while Augustana falls to 5-4 on the year with three losses Friday. CU split on the day to start the year 1-1.
Tayler Castro got things going in the top of the second against the Seawolves, battling back from a 0-2 count to lay down a single. She made her way to third and then scored on a double from Soraya Shahbazian.
SSU tied things up in the bottom half of the inning, but CBU came alive in the top of the fourth. Krista Mann doubled to send in two runners before Erin Burkhart drew a pitch to the body to load up the bases with one out. Hannah Thieroff singled to score another two runners and Jacque Lopez laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to make it 6-1.
CBU threatened the eight-run rule win in the top of the fifth, tacking on two runs to hold an 8-1 lead. With Ali Subia on base, Shahbazian ripped a shot over the fence at left center for her first collegiate home run.
Shahbazian drilled another homer with two runners on and no outs in the sixth to all but seal the victory. The Lancers added two more runs before taking care of business on defense to take the game 13-2.
The Lancers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the middle game and made it 4-0 before Augustana could get on the board. Lopez and Sarah Murphy rounded home plate in the top of the fifth to extend CBU's lead to 6-2, but it wasn't until the sixth that the Lancers could really get cooking.
Murphy singled through the right side and advanced to third as the right fielder couldn't handle the ball cleanly. Mann and Heather Smith took advantage of the error and each scored to make it 9-2. Lopez knocked a deep double, bouncing it off the wall at left center to secure the 11-2 victory — CBU's fourth mercy-rule victory in a row.
The Lancers had even more in the tank for the final game of the day.
Mann led things off by drawing ball four and then rounded third to score on a Burkhart double. Thieroff stepped up to the plate and blasted her first collegiate home run over the fence at left, making it 4-1 in favor of CBU.
CBU took the Golden Bears down in order to step back into the batter's box, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the second. Mann once again started with a walk and Murphy joined her on base. The pair advanced a base on a wild pitch and scored off a Lopez single.
With Jordan Mowatt on base and one out, Mann laid down a sacrifice bunt, but was kept alive as the pitcher threw the ball away. Both Mowatt and Mann scored before CU could manage to get the ball under control.
Murphy grabbed a base hit and proceeded to steal second, allowing Burkhart to send her home on a single up the middle and give CBU a 9-1 lead. The Golden Bears threatened to end the inning by getting the second out at home. Shahbazian added some insurance with an RBI single before CU ended the inning.
The Lancers went on to win the game 10-2 in four and a half innings.
Ashley Coleman, Kellye Springstead and Kayla Hatch each picked up wins in the circle for the Lancers to each stay unblemished on the year.
CBU continues at the Desert Stinger tomorrow, taking on Colorado Mesa at 11:30 a.m. and No. 21 Regis at 2:00 p.m.
