SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A showdown between the 17th and 18th-ranked teams in the NCAA revealed the two sides are not as close as they appear, with California Baptist University cruising to a 15-7 win over St. Francis Friday.
Historic performances from Brent Teraoka and Dominick Nevarez led the No. 17 Lancers to the win, with Teraoka scoring a CBU NCAA-record seven goals and Nevarez notching five assists, which is tied for the second most ever in a CBU game. In addition to being the most in CBU's NCAA era (2013-16), Teraoka's goals are the third-most scored in the program's single-game history.
"Offensively, we looked really good," Coach Kevin Rosa said. "It's probably the best we have looked in terms of ball movement, positioning and the quality shots we were getting."
CBU improves to 15-7 and the No. 18 Terries slip to 7-9. The Lancers continue the Rodeo against 10th-ranked Bucknell and Navy at 10:20 a.m. and 2:20 p.m., respectively, Saturday.
Along with those impressive individual numbers, the Lancers dominated as a unit. They shot .682 (15-for-22) and held St. Francis to a .269 mark (7-26). The win also came on the heels of the Lancers opening a game on a 6-1 run for the second day in a row.
"We weren't too focused on the rankings, we were just focused on ourselves," Rosa said. "The plan has been to do what we do better and make the other team react to us. We want to dictate the tempo and the pace and force them to adjust to us. It worked for us tonight."
St. Francis scored first, 51 seconds into the game, and Teraoka got CBU on the board 66 seconds after that with an even-strength goal. The Lancers took a lead, 2-1, when Teraoka assisted on a Jonathan Lotero goal.
Logan Mena, Nevarez, Teraoka and Elad Gunya scored to give the Lancers a 6-1 advantage with 48 seconds left in the first quarter. Teraoka picked up his hat trick 45 ticks into the second quarter, and CBU built its lead up to six, 8-2, when Teddy Forte scored 1:20 into the frame.
Teraoka went on a 3-0 run of his own to keep the Lancers up six, 11-5, with 7:13 left in the third period. Both teams were kept out of the cage in the fourth quarter, with Lotero, Forte and Royce Daniel Laverne capping off the offense with third-quarter goals.
In addition to the two goals, Lotero drew four ejections and forced four turnovers. Mena also drew four of the Lancers' 11 ejections, while Forte finished with two goals, an assist and steal and Tanner Shore tallied three steals and two assists. Joseph Moorman blocked 10 shots and forced three steals.
