PRINCETON, N.J. —California Baptist University may have dropped a tough one to begin the day, but it ended on a high after beating Iona College 14-12.
In the first match of the Princeton Tournament, CBU faced the host team and surrendered a narrow 12-10 loss against the No. 14 ranked team in the country. The score was tied 9-9 going into the final period as Princeton edged away for the victory in the last quarter.
"It's always tough when you have the host team in the first game of the day," Head coach Jon Miller said. "We weren't able to adjust to the physicality and officiating of the games. Our defense was hit or miss today and that is something that can improve going into tomorrow."
Hannah Evans, who recently broke the Lancers' career scoring record last week, added four more goals to her tally and finished the game with one steal and three drawn ejections. Laura Kocsis scored three goals, created three steals and drew one ejection.
The Lancers would find their groove in their second game of the day, putting on an offensive clinic as seven different players found their names on the scoreboard. The majority of the goals came from Evans (7), but Courtney Menard and Samantha Banks each chipped in two.
Kocsis, Valerie Spezzaferri, Kaitlyn Persky, Paizlee Dreyer and Caroline Howard all grabbed one goal each against Iona.
Persky's goal came at a crucial time in the fourth quarter that gave CBU a 13-12 lead over Iona.
"There were key goals in the two games today," Miller said. "We went on a 5-2 run in the third quarter against Iona and that led the way to our victory."
Goalkeepers Line Medeiros and Meghan Rowland continue to share game time as the two split the games today. Playing against Princeton, Rowland grabbed four saves and two steals on the day, while Medeiros earned six saves and one assist.
Tomorrow is the final day of the Princeton Tournament and it gets no easier as CBU takes on No. 15 Harvard before challenging Villanova in the final game.
"Harvard is a quick team and have a different play style than the previous teams we played against," said Miller. "It should be an interesting match and hopefully we can build off our momentum from our last win."
