Mixed Emotions

PRINCETON, N.J. — It was a weekend of mixed emotions for the California Baptist University women's water polo team as it went 2-2 at the Princeton tournament.
Going into the second and final day of the tournament, the Lancers had a 1-1 record after beating Iona College 14-12 and narrowly losing to No. 14 ranked Princeton 12-10 the day before. With two more games on the second day, the results would remain the same as CBU beat Villanova 12-5, but fell to No. 15 ranked Harvard 8-4.
CBU had a difficult time producing the offense that has been ever so effective this season in the first match of the day against Harvard. The Lancers only managed to score four goals, with two from Hannah Evans, while Valerie Spezzaferri and Courtney Menard each chipped in another.
In the nightcap, the Lancers bounced back immediately and scored 12 goals against Villanova. Seven different Lancers put themselves on the scoresheet.
Defensively, CBU was sound against the Wildcats, allowing only five goals. Goalie Lina Medeiros made 12 saves, while the team as a whole collected six steals, two blocks and four drawn ejections.
Evans and Spezzaferri both knotched three goals a piece in the win, while Samantha Banks scored two goals of her own. Four other individual Lancers found the back of the cage to help CBU win comfortably over the Wildcats.
The Lancers head next to Thousand Oaks, Calif., from Feb. 26-27 to compete in the Tina Finali Invite. There, they will take on the likes of Santa Clara and get a second look at Villanova.
