ST. GEORGE, Utah — California Baptist University cooled off briefly, but got back to scoring in the nightcap. Neither game would go in their favor, however, as the Lancers dropped both games on the day, 9-0 to Western Oregon and 6-5 to Western Washington.
With the losses, CBU drops to 9-3 on the year. WOU improved to 3-5, while WWU sits 5-4 overall.
CBU couldn't get anything going in the first game, falling 9-0 to WOU in six innings. Hannah Thieroff was the only Lancer to pick up a hit in the game, singling to left on a full count in the top of the second.
In the nightcap, Krista Mann got things going right off the bat, knocking a lead off home run over the fence at center. Sarah Murphy then made it 2-0 after getting on base on ball four and stealing home from third.
CBU tacked on three more runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead. With bases loaded and one out, Erin Burkhart drew ball four to walk in the third run of the day. Thieroff — who was the only Lancer to have hits in both games — singled to right, allowing Jordan Mowatt to make it 4-0 Lancers.
Jacque Lopez kept the inning going, knocking an RBI single into the gap at left to make it 5-0.
WWU broke through in the sixth, but still CBU had a four-run cushion heading into the final inning. The Lancers just needed three outs to seal the 5-1 victory, but surrendered six runs before they could do that to fall 6-5 to the Vikings.
CBU will look to regroup back home, hosting Adelphi on Wednesday for a pair of games beginning at 5:00 p.m. and then again on Saturday, starting at 12:00 p.m.
