THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Grabbing two hard fought wins in the Tina Finali Invitational, No. 23-ranked California Baptist University's star Hannah Evans scored a flurry of goals to lift her team over Cal State Monterey Bay, 16-9, and Villanova, 13-8, Friday. She accumulated 12 goals between both games to improve CBU's record to 9-5 on the year.
"After not playing games last weekend, it took us a while to find our groove, but once we did, we finished both games nicely," Coach Jon Miller said.
CBU started the day against the Otters — who were on a two-game winning streak going into the tournament — but that streak quickly came to an end after the Lancers took the game 16-9.
The score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter, but the Lancers took off in the second period to create some distance from the Otters. CBU scored six goals in that frame, with Valerie Spezzaferri, Laura Kocsis and Courntey Menard all grabbing two goals each.
After already scoring two goals in the first period, Evans added another one in the third to give the Lancers a 9-7 lead, putting a stop to the Otters' hopes of climbing back into the game.
From there on, it was Lancer domination as seven more shots found the back of the Otters' cage to close out the game. Evans collected three more goals to put her tally to six in the game, while Caroline Howard, Paizlee Dreyer, Kaitlyn Persky and Spezzaferri also got in on the action, each notching one goal.
Following suit from the first game, the Lancers put on a clinic of attack-minded water polo that led to the 13-8 victory over Villanova in the nightcap.
Once again, Evans scored six goals in the game, while Spezzaferri added another four. Kocsis and Jessica Castellano finished off the score sheet with two and one goals, respectively.
"Valerie really stepped up today, scoring at least three goals in both games and playing consistently on both ends of the pool," Miller said. "We're looking forward to a good game with Santa Clara in the morning."
CBU continues the Tina Finali Invite tomorrow with games against Santa Clara and Chapman. The first match of the day is set to start at 11:45 a.m.
