Split Eagle

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It took a while for No. 9 California Baptist University to get going against Concordia University of Irvine in its PacWest opener. The Lancers grabbed a 3-1 victory in the first game, but dropped the nightcap 5-4 to settle for a split on the day.
The split puts CBU 16-4 overall and starts the Lancers off with a 1-1 conference mark. The Eagles sit 22-3, 6-2 in the PacWest.
Neither team could plate any runners in the early going of the first game as both defenses locked down their opponents.
That all changed in the bottom of the fifth when CBU exploded onto the scene. Sarah Murphy led the inning off with a hard-hit ball straight to the pitcher to get on base. London Miller joined her on base with a single up the middle.
The Eagles managed to get an out, but Jordan Mowatt broke the game open by blasting a triple to deep center — almost looking like she had hit it out of the park — scoring both runners. She then made it 3-0 in favor of CBU by tagging up on a sacrifice fly from Krista Mann.
CBU looked to add some more cushion in the sixth, but CUI's defense kept the threat down by grabbing a double play to end the inning. The Eagles went back to the batter's box in the top of the seventh desperate for three runs to keep the game going. The Lancers would only allow one, however, sealing the 3-1 victory for Ashley Coleman.
CUI didn't wait until the last inning to score in the nightcap, plating one run in the top of the second to hold a 1-0 lead early.
The Lancers responded in the third with two runs off two hits to jump in front 2-1. With one out, Mann walked to get a free ticket to first. Jacque Lopez then laid down a perfect bunt and reached first safely for the base hit, putting runners on second and first.
It looked like CUI might end the inning early as it grabbed the second out, but CBU had a never-say-die attitude as Hannah Thieroff knocked a double to left field to score Mann and Lopez to put her team in front 2-1.
The Eagles scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take back their lead, 4-2, but the Lancers tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. Murphy led the frame off with a triple to center field and scored on a Mowatt single to left. Tayler Castro — who was on second — took advantage of CUI not paying attention to her and scored on the next play to even it up at 4-4.
Two hits in the top of the seventh gave CUI a 5-4 lead, putting pressure on CBU to score at least one run in the bottom of the inning to extend the game. Erin Burkhart started a rally, doubling to left center, but she got caught in a pickle and the Eagles grabbed the third out to seal the 5-4 victory.
The Lancers will look to avenge the split next week, heading to Concordia's house for another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
